Ghormeh Sabzi
No, you do not have HPPD... You have not taken a hallucinogen. From the DSM-IV description of HPPD: "The re-experiencing, following cessation of use of a hallucinogen, of one or more of the perceptual symptoms that were experienced while intoxicated with the hallucinogen (e.g., geometric hallucinations, false perceptions of movement in the peripheral visual fields, flashes of colors, intensified colors, trails of images of moving objects, positive afterimages, halos around objects, macropsia, and micropsia." Going by that definition, technically, many of us do not have HPPD. "The re-experiencing ... of one or more of the perceptual symptoms that were experienced while intoxicated with the hallucinogen". Many of us never experienced these strange visuals until after the drug use, not during it. But personally I think that's too simplistic a way to look at the definition. nepuinthesky
thats right. and i also believe that the mechanism is the same and this forum the best medically support board for altered perception is so everyone with this disturbances get the best information here no matter if drug induced or not. but i wouldnt call my self suffering of HPPD if i had never taken a drug because some people could label you a drughead. 1998
I heard my neck crack while on shrooms, and then I light show of colors arrived. I knew something was wrong, the next month my muscles were spasming constantly and I had every symptom full blown. Wish I had this board to check out while that was happening cause doc's were more confused then i was. Just a bad memory It does bother me when hypochondriacs think they have hppd, but I still feel for them!

I agree that this is the best forum for those with our symptoms. There's a lot of good discussion and everyone is very friendly. I have yet to make up my mind whether I consider the mechanism to be the same. I lean towards your opinion, but at the same time, if you read this forum and the visual snow forum you'll notice subtle differences in symptoms. For example, quite a few people on this forum have ghosting, whereas it seems quite rare on the visual snow forum. Additionally, there seems to be a lot more success with medications on this forum. Whether that's because people on this forum are more likely to try medications, or specifically medications that are known to help, I don't know. Medical research and trials are what's needed really, but that's probably unlikely for the immediate future. So the best we can do for now is perhaps a mass survey. I'll happily conduct this once I find relief from leg pain that I experience as it makes it impossible to sit down for long periods and get anything done! I'm sure I read before that Dr. Abraham believes visual snow etc that is not been induced by drugs to be a completely different disorder - although I don't know where the person who posted that got that information. And of course he could be wrong, anyway. It's something I meant to ask him when I spoke to him ... but I forgot. I hope to soon see a specialist who has a lot of experience of the symptoms of this disorder in the UK and I'll see what his views are on the matter. Jay1
I don't think it is in our best interests to start calling any old visual problem HPPD.... It is confusing enough for doctors already. HPPD comes specifically from hallucinogenic drug use, case closed. http://www.thosewithvisualsnow.com is a great resource for non drug induced visual problems. There is nothing to stop people coming here and researching or chatting... But don't call it HPPD unless you have done drugs.
2muchmandy
The uk has hppd specialists. Please tell me more. The absent mindedness and lack of care from my doctor scares the crap outta me

But don't call it HPPD unless you have done drugs. yes i agree totaly as i write above unless you have taken drugs dont call it HPPD thats impossible even because of the diagnostic criterias. there are PMA which also is researched a bit (known in medical books), remember not every migraine must be noticeable by headaches. And also there is PPD its not an official diagnosis but i think doctor Abraham uses this as well.(there are a few studies showing Palinopsia can ocur in healthy brains, why not the other symptoms) I have yet to make up my mind whether I consider the mechanism to be the same. Whether that's because people on this forum are more likely to try medications, or specifically medications that are known to help, I don't know. i think the main diffrences are that alot people of the Yuku forum report progressive symptoms in my opinion that is because of a very simple reason. if you have HPPD stop all drugs and your trigger has left your life so your brain is maybe able to heal. if you have PMA or maybe something like a status epilepticus the trigger can be still with you. like somebody with HPPD still using drugs, and your symptoms are able to get worse. but i read about the most symptoms you can find here also there. also ghosting and movement is reported by some but not as frequent. today the only diffrences we are able to call according to the criteria are the diffrent triggers. a few years ago Dr. Podoll did a long survey about these symptoms you can find it here: http://www.migraine-...6/index_en.html i think every thing is mentioned there except a cure(maybe that wasnt his aim, seems he wanted to do a survey about Migraine Art) but this is after dr Abrahams work one of the best works till now. every doctor who dont find a cure must be wrong in some persons view and i think this is one of the biggest problems of the yuku forum, every day a new therory from a not medical person which gives false hope or anxiety, its like a vicious circle. a example could be the name of this topic^^ or like: Person a: "my ring finger is longer than my forefinger maybe thats the reason af my symptoms" Person b: "ohh i have this, too" Person c: "seems a lot of people have this, maybe its related" that is leading in a wrong direction and drives people into hypochrondria
