mgrade Posted October 4, 2012 Report Share Posted October 4, 2012 These are glutamate receptors. Glutamate is an amino acid/neurotransmitter similar to what you find in MSG chinese cooking. Glutamate is probably THE main neurotransmitter and has an excitatory property to nerve circuits. Most receptors are directly hooked up to ion channels which regulate, among other things, for the most part synaptic voltage "equilibrium". But with receptors like MgluR, it is not hooked up with the ion channels but effects other proteins, which than cause a cascade of neuro-action within the neuron. Link to comment
